Major General GA Umelo is a retired senior military officer who served in the Nigerian Army for 38 years and retired in the year 2023. Gen. Umelo had BSc in Chemistry (NDA) and a Masters Degree Holder in Strategic Studies (University of Ibadan.

While in service, he attended several leadership and risk management courses and held several important positions. He served as Senior Instructor, School of Artillery, Directing Staff Armed Forces Command and Staff College and National Defense College.

He also served as Commanding Officer Nigeria Battalion 15 United Nations Mission in Liberia, Commanding Officer 323 Artillery Regiment, Commanding Officer 313 Artillery Regiment and Commander 38 Artillery Brigade in the north east.

He was also Director Peacekeeping Operations Army Headquarters, GOC 81 Division Lagos, Director General Defense Simulation Centre and ended his career as the Director General Defense Research and Development Bureau. He is widowed with two children and plays golf as hobby. He hails from Imo State.
